Shockwave therapy

Did you know that Dungannon foot clinic offers shockwave therapy (SWT)?

Shockwave therapy is a medical device used in orthopaedics, physiotherapy and sports medicine. SWT can provide fast pain relief of conditions such as plantar fasciopathy, achilles tendonopathy and patella femoral pain. It is a non-invasive therapy with no need for painkillers making it an ideal therapy to speed up recovery and cure chronic pain.

Shockwave therapy is a clinically proven treatment for soft tissue injuries. A shockwave is defined as a sound wave that passes through the body and is not an electrical pulse. Treatment initiates a pro inflammatory response in the tissue where the shockwaves have been applied. The body responds by increasing the blood circulation in the impact area which in turn accelerates the body’s own healing processes. The shockwaves break down injured tissue and calcifications.

Shockwave therapy is recommended for patients who have already had previous conservative therapies that have provided little or no benefit. It is normal to experience immediate pain relief following the treatment. Reported side effects are minimal, however there may be some discomfort during treatment such as skin reddening.

SWT can be used to treat a multitude of lower limb conditions.

-Plantar Fasciopathy (heel pain)

-Achilles tendonopathy

-Patella femoral pain (Knee pain)

-Heel spur (calcifications)
